Shopping for curtain rods isn't easy when you are schlepping from one store to another and they don't have the right size/finish/style that you are looking for. Shopping for them online is much easier and you have a larger variety to select from.

First things first - find your dimensions

If you don't want the curtains to overlap the window when pulled open, you need to allow space for what is called the stackback. The stackback is the amount of space the curtains take up when open. In general, we add a third of the window width with to the overall measurement.

Sometimes the curtains are stationary, and are just meant to frame the window. In this case you will want to take your measurements in the same way so that they do not obstruct the view.

Next step - what kind of curtain rod are you looking for

Depending on the style of window treatment you will be using, you may not need a decorative rod. A basic rod is usually just white metal, and is recommended that you use these under a top treatment or a cornice so that when your drapes are opened, the rod is hidden underneath. These are also a lot less expensive than the decorative curtain rods.

Basic Traverse Rods - how to order

A traverse curtain rod is a rod that has a pulley mechanism with carriers that allow you to simply pull on a cord to open and close your curtains. They allow you to open and close the curtains quickly without touching them, therefore helping to keep them clean and stain free.

Before ordering a traverse rod, you need to know which direction you want the drapes to open. you have 3 options.

A double traverse curtain rod is used when you want to hang two layers of window treatments on one window. Usually a curtain sheer goes on the rod closest to the window and the drapes will go in front of those. Both will be able to traverse on the rod.

Again, take note of how you want them to open.

Decorative traverse curtain rods are used when you don't want to use a top treatment in the window design. There is a much more limited selection of these than there are of a standard decorative curtain rod, and these can be very difficult to find in the stores.

These are made to look like a standard curtain rod with rings, but function like a conventional traverse rod.

The universal track curtain rod is frequently used in high rises where there are floor to ceiling windows. This very small track is mounted to the ceiling and has carriers that the drapes are hung on. It is a very unobtrusive curtain rod, and is simple to install and use.

The market is plentiful with decorative curtain rods. Choices include metal, resin,wrought iron, and wood, with almost any finish you would like.
