Packing up is never fun! Especially when things get broken in the storing and moving process. I usually write about DIY interior design, but it is equally important to know how to pack up all of those decorative accessories and move them when the time comes.

Whether you are looking to de-clutter, and perhaps stage your home, or you are ready to move, you probably need to buy boxes. More than likely, you want them to be cheap storage boxes. Depending on what you are packing up, you have several choices in what kinds of containers to use.

Did you know there was a difference?

Honestly, I didn't really realize this until I made the mistake of buy moving boxes for things that I wanted to store. Obviously, sometimes these can be the same kind of box, but there are differences between the two.

A storage box is made of sturdier cardboard or plastic, and will hold up over time. It usually has a removable lid that you can easily open and close to access the contents. They also usually have handles or places to easily grip the box for lifting. One drawback to storage boxes is that they don't break down like a moving box does. That makes it difficult to store them when they are empty and not in use.

Moving boxes are made of thinner cardboard, and usually need to be taped shut, which makes it much more difficult to open and close repeatedly.While these will stack nicely because the seams are taped shut, they need to be packed well in order to hold up to several boxes being piled on top. A half empty box is going to crush pretty easily if you are not careful about where it is stacked. Because this kind of box does not usually have handles, it makes it difficult to move and lift repeatedly.

A bankers box, also referred to as a file box, is quite often used for storage because it is cheaper than plastic storage totes. It is made of cardboard, has handles and a lid that is easily removed and replaced. You can find these boxes for about $2 each. If you work in an office that uses a lot of paper, you can recycle a couple of the boxes that the paper comes in.

Space bags can really be helpful when you are trying to pack up a bunch of clothes and/or bedding to fit into boxes or plastic totes. There is nothing like trying to pack up a whole house full of stuff and put it into a POD.

A favorite one of mine to use is the space bag tote. I like it because it can be also used after your move. Storing out of season clothes and tucking it under your bed is one of the best ways to decluttering your home!

Unlike moving boxes, you don't just throw these out after moving either. You can reuse them each season!

One last kind of box I am going to tell you about - boxes for dishes. When packing expensive dinner ware, you will want to take every precaution. If you don't have the boxes the dishes came in, do yourself a favor and get a couple of the dish packing sets. You can buy the inserts separately if you've already got your boxes.
