Curtain Rods - You may think – ‘What’s the big deal? Just buy any curtain rod and hang it up!’ Well, quite frequently that is exactly what people do. And once they’ve got these nice new curtains hung, it just looks - blah. Decorative Curtain Rods can definitely make a difference when it comes to the overall design of your windows.

Buying Curtain Rods

Drapery will determine the kind of curtain rod you need to buy. If you can help it, never buy the curtain rod before you buy the window treatments. There are a lot of factors that will determine what kind of rod(s) you will need.

If you are hanging two layers of window treatments, like sheer curtains and a set of panels; then you will need a double curtain rod. Pinch pleated drapes will also require a way in which to attach them to the pole. Often this is done with drapery hooks or clip rings, but each of those will require a different kind of rod. Some custom made window treatments will not require any decorative hardware.

Rod Diameter is crucial to know before buying curtain rods. Sometimes the diameter can be so small that it looks dinky when hung and it will bend after a couple of months. On the other hand, if you use grommet curtains, you don't want the diameter to be too big to fit through the grommets.

Take a second to inspect the screws and anchors in the package. These are not always the best choice to hang something of substantial weight. You may want to replace these on your own after considering if you will be mounting them into a stud or not.

People often only think about the finish and never think about the functional before buying. This is what usually leads to throwing the curtain rod through the window! The finish is a very important part though because it is what stands out the most. It should be a very easy decision – just take a look around the room and see what kinds of things are already there. Light fixtures, door knobs, drawer pulls and cabinets will all point to the finishes that would work best in the room. If you have a solid color window treatment, be a little bit daring on the finial choices and add some interest in that way. It is a great way to add a little bit of artwork to the room.

Decorative Curtain Rods - When Not to use them

Don’t forget that you actually don’t need a decorative curtain rod for every kind of window treatment. This is where you can save some money. The curtain sheer and valance treatment is a common one that does not need a decorative curtain rod. A very simple and cheap adjustable rod will be sufficient because no one will ever see the hardware. Anytime the rod is completely covered by the fabric of the window treatments, you do not need decorative hardware. Cornices and board-mounted top treatments won't need a decorative rod either!

After taking all of these things into consideration, it WILL be ‘No big deal’ the next time you shop for decorative curtain rods. You will be able to instantly rule out some of those overwhelming number of choices you are faced with at the store and zero in on exactly what you need.
