Folding Beds

If you have overnight guests often, you may find yourself in need of a folding bed. Folding beds, sometimes called a rollaway bed, are very convenient to use when you need more beds that then number of bedrooms you have.

A folding bed does exactly what it says - it folds in half. A rollaway bed also folds up, but it is also usually on wheels so that when you want to put it away or get it out, it can be easily rolled into another room.

When looking at buying additional guest beds, there are three options to consider.

  1. Folding Bed
  2. Air Mattress
  3. Cot

There are many different kinds and brands of all of these options, so here we will talk about the differences in folding beds, and what you want to look for when buying one.

Rollaway beds are typically your most expensive type of folding beds. Costs range from $150 - $250. When you look at the reviews of some of the cheapest options, you will find that most people are not happy with these beds. If your price range is on the lower end, consider buying a higher quality air mattress instead.

When you buy a folding bed, you want to look for one that is made with a steel frame, and has clear assembly instructions.

Once you are assured that you have a reliable frame, the next thing you want to look at is the mattress. Some are made with spring coils like a traditional mattress. Some are simply foam, and others are a fiberfill. You may think that the traditional spring coils would provide the best support, but a high quality foam mattress will usually work better in this circumstance.

Air Mattress Guest Bed

Air mattresses can be the cheapest solution to solving bed crisis, but it isn't for everyone. Young children don't usually have any problems with sleeping on them and they usually look at it as being fun to sleep somewhere different.

Older people are usually ones that have a difficult time sleeping on an air mattress. They find it to be uncomfortable and really difficult to get in and out of. You can aleave some of that difficulty by purchasing a taller air mattress, but they are generally a bit more expensive.

Folding Cot

When you need add a lot of beds in a short amount of time, a folding cot is probably what you are looking for. These are designed for a single person to sleep on and have no mattress. This makes it much easier to store when they aren't in use since there isn't anything bulky to take up a lot of room.

You can also take these camping with you. Again they take up less room than air mattresses so that leaves you with more room in your tent.

Folding Bed Frame

For those that do not have the space to store a rollaway bed, there is another option to provide your guests with a bed that is up off of the floor. A folding bed frame acts as a box springs that you can add an air mattress to.

The frame folds up flat and is lightweight so that you can easily store it under another bed, in a basement, or a closet. The air mattress deflates and folds up compact for easy storage as well.

Another benefit to this type of a guest bed is that you are able to provide a bed that is larger than a twin. Rollaway beds are almost always a twin size, but the folding bed frames and air mattresses are available in a Queen and Full size as well as a Twin.

Many people also use the folding bed frames instead of a box springs for their permanent beds as well.

I remember my grandmother had one exactly like that and it came in handy. That's a good price to have a guest bed when you need it.
