Finding sheer curtains sounds like a pretty simple thing to do, but it can be quite difficult. You will be worn out from running around to ten different stores trying to find the size, color, and quantity of sheer panels you need for the room. Murphy's law says that as soon as you find the right color, there will only be one panel in stock!

So, if you know your window size and you've got the curtain rod, you can figure out what length your sheers need to be. Typically they are sold in 3 different legnths -

Many people are confused about where the best place to hang their curtain rods. Should it be right above the window? At the ceiling? 4" above the window frame? Etc...

Part of this decision is determined by the look or design you are going for, and part is determined by the availability of product.

A 63" panel is used when you do not want the fabric to reach the ground. You may have an obstruction in the way like a radiator or bookshelf or something like that. In that case you would measure 63" from the top of the obstruction to figure out where to hang the rod.

An 84" panel is the most commonly used size and therefore has the most selection available. Typically, you would hang this just above the window frame.

In the past few years, ceiling heights have increased therefore giving lots of headroom above windows. The room can look off balance with little windows if you mount the curtain rod just above the window frame. This is where you can create the illusion of a larger window by simply moving the curtain rod higher up on the wall and using a 95" panel.

Take a look at the sketches. The top sketch shows the 84" panel hung just above the window frame, and the bottom shows a 95" panel. The bottom window looks bigger, but is actually the same size.

Once you've determined the sizes you will need, you can take a look at the various types of fabrics and designs that are available. If you are using the sheers on their own, you will probably want to use something other than a plain sheer - add a design element.

You would be hard pressed to find this kind of selection of sheer curtains in any discount home store.
