Storage Lockers for Your House

Storage lockers can be your lifesaver when it comes to an easy organization plan that kids can follow. The K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule is key when it comes to teaching your kids to pick up after themselves. Give them one place to dump all of their gear, close the door, and it is amazing how long your house will stay clean.

While decorative storage boxes are the key to keeping little clutter out of site, you need something much bigger to keep the backpacks & lunch boxes out of site. A garage or mudroom is the optimal place to put a storage locker – or anywhere that is in close proximity to the door they enter when they come home. You can even use these in their rooms – the metal storage lockers are really in right now. Have them spray paint it their favorite color – a great way for them to get involved in decorating their room.

Where to use them:

  • Mudrooms
  • Laundry Rooms
  • Garage
  • Kitchen
  • Hallway
  • Foyer
  • Hearth Room
  • Playrooms

Types of Storage Lockers

  • Metal storage lockers – These are the most common type of locker and are very easy to find. They tend to have an industrial look to them that works well in a very functional space, or a modern designed space. These can also be used to store flammable items and other things that need to be locked up.
  • Plastic storage lockers – Most of these are to hold and organize small items or parts. Great for craft or hobby rooms and garages.
  • Kids storage lockers – These are made specifically for little kids and many preschools use these. You will find a lot of them are an open front design, and may have a small bench to sit on as well. Perfect for them to hang a backpack and coat in, plus a place to sit and tie shoes. Use this in a playroom for dress-up clothes or store balls and other equipment in.
  • Wood Storage Lockers – These are great to use in places where metal storage lockers would be an eye sore. You can easily add these to any room in the house because they look like cabinetry.

Cost of Storage Lockers

Used storage lockers are the most inexpensive and can often be found on Ebay & Craigslist. When schools or businesses replace old lockers they often just want to get rid of them fast so you can get quite a good deal, sometimes under $50.

New metal lockers can start in the $150 range, depending on the size and quantity. Shipping can add to that cost. Plastic lockers and cabinets are usually a bit less expensive, unless they are a heavy duty plastic. Wood storage lockers will be the priciest, but will also look more like furniture than lockers.

No matter what the cost, home organization is a key element to reducing stress levels and increasing your happiness. If you can’t afford the exact style or design that you want right now, use plastic storage boxes to contain all of the kids’ stuff. It is better than having it strewn around the house reminding you of chores to be done.
